Ethan B. Shelton, Founder of Shelton Farms
Serving Michiana Since 1947
Ethan and Rose Shelton started Shelton Farms in 1947 when they sold their corner grocery store near Lincoln Park in Chicago and moved their family to Berrien Center, Michigan. To help make ends meet, Ethan barbered in Niles and Rose worked as a payroll clerk at Berrien General Hospital. Eventually, Ethan owned his own barbershop and Rose became personnel manager and filled in as administrator of the hospital.
Ethan and Rose were married for 69 years until she passed in 1995. Ethan is now 106 years young and is blessed with good health. He is very active. He is a ballroom dancer, avid gardener and loves to golf. When asked what the secret is to his longevity, Ethan suggests that you chew your food well and eat lots of vegetables. Those close to him would say that his eternal good humor, positive thinking and active livestyle probably contribute as well. Here are pictures of Ethan jamming with his music buddies at his 106th birthday party, lining up his tee shot, tending his bountiful garden and playing music at the Niles Apple Festival.
